Canterbury Art Prize: Inaugural Competition

The Canterbury Art Prize is an exciting new competition being launched as part of the St Edmund’s Arts Festival and in partnership with The Canterbury Auction Galleries. The inaugural competition was originally planned for 2020 but was unable to go ahead due to the pandemic.

2022 offers pupils aged 15-18 who attend East Kent Schools the exciting opportunity to participate.

This year’s overall winner will receive a trophy, a £100 cash prize, two places on St Edmund’s School’s art workshop with renowned artist Ian Murphy on the 30th June 2022. Two runners up will receive prizes of art materials.

There is also a category open to those aged 18+ and the winner will receive £175 prize. Therefore, all parents, teachers and artists should be encouraged to take part – please spread the word!

The winning artworks from both categories will be displayed at the St Edmund’s Art Festival (from 29th June) and then at the Lilford Gallery in Canterbury!

We are delighted that the judging panel will include Ian Murphy and a local artist. Ian Murphy is highly successful as an artist and educator. He travels worldwide in pursuit of visual stimuli for his own creative work but he is also in high demand for his inspirational workshops. He is constantly endorsing the benefits of working in the creative arena and his expertise and opinion has been sought by such institutions as the BBC, the National Society for Education in Art & Design and the British Council. Since Ian Murphy often uses buildings as foci within his art works so for this inaugural competition, the theme is ‘Architecture’.
