English has an image problem: What can we do about it?
Some teachers (and university lecturers) have been glancing nervously into the future wondering if their subject, as a post-GCSE choice, will dwindle into near-extinction, alongside the Latin masters of generations past. But we know the fact of the central importance of communication, and the host of issues (social, ethical, psychological, cultural) around it, plus its value to later citizenship & employability, make it a very significant subject.
