Rearranging Deckchairs launch event at Turner Contemporary

On 28 June Esther Miles, our fabulous Artist-in-Residence, spent the day displaying 42 unique deckchairs ahead of the arrival of the student artists, their families, teachers, funders, VIP guests and the Mayor of Margate to launch their summer on display on Turner Contemporary’s terrace.

The event was a very special occasion, a real celebration of the collaborative effort of our schools, CCCU ambassadors, our artist-in-residence, our teachers and the funders who had the vision to support this project.

After drinks on the terrace everyone assembled in the Foyle Rooms to enjoy a performance by The EKST Big Sing, our partnership choir, followed by a welcome by the Mayor of Margate. The speeches were then led by Christina Astin, Co-Chair of the Management Group, who thanked everyone involved in the project and spoke to two of the students involved, Dom from St Lawrence and Rachel from St Anselm’s, to hear first hand what they had got out of being part of this unique collaborative project. Esther Miles also spoke about where her idea came from for the project and the incredible results on display – each an art work in its own right and looking spectacular as a group of 42.

Well done to all involved and do visit the deckchairs* this summer… it is well worth it.

*Please note that the deckchairs will be on display on a rota system as follows:

Deckchairs made by students from Herne Bay High School, The King’s School and St Anselm’s RC School will be on display from 29 June until 4 August

Deckchairs made by students from St Lawrence College, Spires Academy,  Dover Christ Church Academy and St Edmund’s School will be on display from 5 August until 8 September.

After this date all the deckchairs will go to the Pines Calyx for the month of September.

Please note that on very wet days the deckchairs might not be in use at either venue.
